Stuck on the water? How to Manually Stow Your Minn Kota Ulterra Trolling Motor

by Marsten Bednarz 14 Oct 2026 0 comments

If your Minn Kota Ulterra trolling motor won't stow automatically, knowing how to manually stow it can save you a lot of frustration, especially when you're out on the water.

The Ulterra's automatic stow and deploy feature is convenient, but electrical issues, low battery voltage, or mechanical problems can sometimes prevent the motor from returning to its stowed position.

In this quick video from Deep V Rigging Company, we demonstrate how to manually stow a Minn Kota Ulterra trolling motor.

What to Do If Your Minn Kota Ulterra Won't Stow

Before attempting an emergency manual stow, check whether your motor will respond to the normal stow command from the remote, foot pedal, or motor's control panel.

If the motor still won't stow, you may need to use the emergency manual stow procedure.

Important: The procedure depends on which Ulterra model you own. Standard Ulterra and Ulterra QUEST motors have different manual release mechanisms and instructions.

How to Manually Stow a Standard Minn Kota Ulterra

For standard, non-QUEST Ulterra motors, Minn Kota's emergency procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Remove the right-side cover from the trolling motor mount.

  2. Loosen and release the manual tilt knob.

  3. Locate and release the trim mechanism to raise the motor shaft.

  4. Carefully pivot the motor toward its stowed position.

  5. Position the lower unit securely on the mounting ramps.

  6. Secure the motor using the emergency stow strap.

These are summarized steps, not a replacement for the manufacturer's complete instructions. Follow the official procedure for your motor's model and year.

Always disconnect power before working on the motor's mechanical release components, keep your hands clear of moving parts, and secure the motor before transporting your boat.

For detailed instructions, visit Minn Kota's Official Emergency Stow Guide.

Does This Apply to the Minn Kota Ulterra QUEST?

No. Ulterra QUEST motors use a different manual stow bypass procedure.

Refer to the appropriate Minn Kota Ulterra Owner's Manual before attempting to manually stow your motor.
